Do I need personal Travel Insurance?

One of Kelso Travels conditions of booking is that you and all of your party have personal travel insurance and you will be asked to provide proof of it. If you have no insurance you can arrange your own cover or we can refer you to our preferred agent who will chose the right cover for your party and type of holiday. Everyone in your party must be covered and it is important to have the right insurance to suit all the components of your holiday.
Tell Kelso Travel when discussing your holiday and we will provide you with the contact details for an insurance quotation.
Kelso Travel can be contacted through this website or email info@kelsotravel.com or telephone 0845 2300 885.

Is the deposit and final balance of our holiday safe guarded?

Yes. Kelso Travel are members of the Travel Trust Association (TTA), a trade association for Independent Tour Operators who provide a twofold insurance cover for all the money paid to Kelso Travel for holidays.
Firstly, this TTA cover ensures all monies paid by you to Kelso Travel, are paid into a Trust Account that is supervised by independent trustees (Banker, Accountant or Solicitor) and cannot not be released until you return from your holiday.
The second insurance (Stand Alone Safe Seat Plan) guarantees that should any fraud or dishonesty occur and your money has not been put in the Trust Account, the TTA will guarantee the financial obligation of the member (Kelso Travel) to repay such sums if and when necessary.
We issue you with a certificate and an explanatory leaflet with the full details on receipt of your deposit for your holiday.
You can also visit www.traveltrust.co.uk/guarantee and see the full terms of insurance.

Yes. We have professional insurance to cover all our business activities including public liability. The Travel Trust Association (TTA) requires proof of professional insurance as part of their membership requirements.

Why should I book a holiday through an Independent Tour Operator?

If you do book through an ITO like Kelso Travel you can be assured that all components of your holiday are assured and responsibility stays with the Operator.
See also, the FAQ - Is the deposit and final balance of our holiday safe guarded?
Also, all the travel arrangements including foreign language communication problems are done for you and should you need help with any aspect of the holiday whilst away, the ITO is just a telephone call away.

Do Kelso Travel sell package holidays?

No. We do not sell other peoples holidays or tours. Kelso Travel has operated as a truly Independent Tour Operator for 24 years creating holidays directly with each supplier. Any new suppliers are personally inspected by us and we maintain constant communication with all of them so we can continue to offer clients the best possible service.

Do Independent Tour Operators sell Tours to the general public?

No. As an Independent Tour Operator we create Bespoke tours and sometimes re-use those tours at a later date, if it is suitable for another group. This is how Kelso Travel acts.
Kelso Travel usually creates a tour in conjunction with a group of people and provides an itinerary to satisfy their needs in all aspects of transport, destination, route, places to visit, accommodation and cost. After all it is their tour.

Back to questions

Can Charities benefit from Bespoke Tours?

Yes. As an Independent Tour Operator, Kelso Travel creates tours for Charities and agrees to give a high percentage of the profit back to the organizations. Kelso Travel has done this for many years now and it has been very popular and successful.
If you are a group of people with Charitable status and with a tour in mind or would like to discuss tours with us, please contact us through the website or email on info@kelsotravel.com or telephone 0845 2300 885.

How and when do I pay for my holiday?

After Kelso Travel ahs detailed your holiday and issued you with a fully itemised quotation you will need to pay a deposit (usually £150 per person). This can be done by posting the signed booking form and a cheque or by scanning the form and card details and emailing them to us. The balance of your holiday is due 8 weeks before the holiday starts. A reminder will be sent 10 weeks before the departure date
Communications can be either postal or electronic as stated although we prefer to be paperless as often as possible.

Why do we arrange our own flights to certain destinations?

This component of your holiday has many choices (Carrier, airport, departure times,
registration details...) including when the best deals are available (for cost). The cost effectiveness requires flexibility and you are the best to control this; at least that’s what Kelso Travel believes. We advise you which airports we use for inward and outward journey transfers to your destination and meet you off your flight.

Can we pre-order groceries if we are Self-catering?

Yes. We will send you a grocery list electronically that you will need to return to us before the start of your holiday. The hotel will then arrange for goods to be in your accommodation when you arrive. Payment is made at the hotel reception whilst you are there.

Back to questions

What size is your largest self catering cabin?

We have cabins and apartments that sleep up to 16 people. Some accommodation have saunas and drying rooms (if winter accommodation).

Why do you operate Sunday to Sunday at your resorts?

Doing this gets Kelso Travel premium rates with all our suppliers and we pass them on to our clients. We can make alternative arrangements should you wish but there may be increases in tariffs and expenses.

What is the baggage allowance on Air travel?

20kg is the accepted allowance for the airlines that serve the Norwegian destinations we currently offer. These include Flybmi, British Airways, SAS, Norwegian and Ryanair. It is advisable to check with the Airline before packing as excess baggage fees will apply and the rules governing this differ with each Carrier. Hand luggage is usually one item per passenger.

What is the cabin baggage allowance on Airlines?

This differs slightly with each Carrier we use for the Norwegian destinations. Most only allow one main piece of hand luggage and one laptop or handbag. The handbag/laptop must fit under the seat in front of you on the aircraft. As an example Ryanair state as hand luggage a 10kg maximum weight and dimensions no bigger that 55cm x 40cm x 20cm. British Airways state maximum dimensions of 56cm x 45cm x 25cm. It is advisable to check with the Carrier before setting off to the Airport.

Back to questions

How do I take my skis and boots as Airline baggage?

This differs slightly with each Carrier we use for the Norwegian destinations. British Airways state three methods of preparing skis and boots for hold luggage. All the equipment bags have to be recognised retail items; pack the boots and skis in the ski bag; pack the boots and skis separately; pack the skis in a ski bag and the boots in the checked hold baggage. If the weight of the equipment exceeds your free checked allowance, fees will be applicable. Check with the Carrier before setting off for the airport.

Do you have to be really fit to experience climbing adventures?

Not necessarily. There are many types of climbing all requiring various skills. Strength and fitness are of course important but you can supplement your weaknesses by trying via Ferrata for instance, where safety is assured, or trying canyoning which can be great fun with a combination of climbing and getting wet (you have a wet suit on). Try out a local climbing wall first and see how you get on. www.ukclimbingwalls.com

Which Airlines should I use for Kelso Travels destination airports?

Our transfer pick up airports are Oslo central (Gardermoen) and Sandefjord (Torp).
Currently only Ryanair fly to Torp and SAS, Norwegian, British Airways and Flybmi use Gardermoen.

What are the Airport Transfer vehicles?

We use 16 seat private minibuses or private taxis depending on how many of our clients are travelling and whether they have skis or not. The drivers are used to our clients and are very friendly.

Can I change the details of my holiday once a deposit has been paid?

Yes is the short answer. As an Independent Tour Operator we believe that all our clients’ holidays are unique and we want you to get the holiday YOU want. Sometimes, changes do arise and we always try to respond accordingly. We make no administration charges for these changes. Changes are subject to room availabilities (for accommodation) or equipment and guides availabilities (for climbing, cycling or other outdoor adventures). Other details such as switching from Half to Full board at the hotel or deciding snowboarding is your passion and not downhill skiing is okay with us and we will hire the equipment accordingly.

Back to questions

Can I get skiing lessons at the Gaustablikk resort?

Yes. Ski lessons are included in our Alpine ski package (equipment, lift pass and lessons) which is unique to Kelso Travel. The lessons for the younger skiers are held in a 90 minute “Troll Club” (group lessons) each weekday, where they learn ski control and have fun.
Adults join the group lesson appropriate to their skills, which lasts 45 minutes each weekday.
One to one lessons are also available in sessions of 45 minutes for downhill, snowboard or cross country skiing – ask us for details.

Do I need to pre-book my skiing equipment and lift passes?

We offer an Alpine Ski package that combines these (and lessons). We ask you to
complete a short questionnaire that lists your personal skiing requirements, so that we can have your equipment set up and waiting for you on your first day. Lift passes are in swipe cards and these will be included with your equipment.

Are your Outdoor Adventure holidays suitable for children and adults?

Our two resorts of Gaustablikk and Savalen both offer outdoor adventures for everyone. It really depends on your skills and what level of challenge you want as to which adventure and resort you choose. Savalen offers rock climbing, mountain biking, canoeing and kayaking, walking and hiking, moose safari and horse riding, whilst Gaustablikk offers ice climbing, rock climbing, canyoning, mountain biking and walking and hiking. Gaustablikk also offers the unique Base Camp adventure (see separate FAQ). Please talk to us about your needs and challenges and we will advise and help you choose your resort.

Back to questions

Do you have any Outdoor Adventures just for teenagers?

Yes. We have a Base Camp adventure for teenagers between the ages of 14 and 17. The Base Camp is offered at the Gaustablikk resort where the teenagers are collected and transported from the hotel or self-catering apartments on three separate days, for a single adventure of either rock climbing, canyoning or mountain biking. Each adventure is fully supervised for their safety and all equipment provided. They are returned to the resort at the end of each day.

Are holidays in Norway suitable for children?

Yes definitely. The Norwegians are a very family orientated Nation and that fact is reflected in their accommodation pricing strategies alone. Most hotels, and ours at the resorts of Gaustablikk and Savalen are no exception, have under 4’s staying for free and children between 4 and 14 staying at either 50% or 75% of an adult price. The hotels and amenities cater for children with crèches and pre-dinner clubs, games rooms and staff that naturally feel comfortable with children. To enable children to participate in all Outdoor Adventures and Skiing Activities we provide; Pulk hire for cross country skiing, a Base Camp adventure just for teenagers, downhill slopes for the younger skiers, rock climbing and canyoning lessons for teenagers and trailers for mountain bikes so younger children can accompany their parents.

Can we have a holiday combining skiing and ice climbing?

Yes. We can organize your holiday to suit you. You will need to pre-book your ice climbing days so your equipment, instructors and transport are available. Your skiing requirements are always flexible and usually part of our Alpine ski package.

Back to questions

Can we hire a car for our holiday in Norway?

Yes. We have a preferred agent at both our destination airports. Your chosen vehicle will be pre-booked and waiting for you on your arrival. Just ask us when requesting a holiday quotation and we will advise you accordingly.

Are the activity holidays at both of your resorts?

Yes. Both Savalen and Gaustablikk offer activities. Contact us and tell us which activities interest you and we will advise you on the best resort to visit. We can also provide you with a list of activities for each resort.

Where in Norway are Gaustablikk and Savalen?

Gaustablikk is 180km NW of Oslo (3 hours by road), 15km from the town of Rjukan. It is only a resort with an hotel complex, a ski station and some private cabins. It is beside the highest mountain in southern Norway (Gaustatoppen 1883m).
Savalen is 330km N of Oslo (4 ½ hours by road), 10km from the town of Tynset. It is set on the edge of a forest, beside a huge lake making it an idyllic activity resort.
Both resorts can be reached by train, coach or car, but our private transfer service is recommended for both speed and cost.
